Asian Coleslaw

One of my favorite easy dishes is Asian coleslaw. I always have to double the recipe because I can go through it pretty quickly. There are lot of variations on this recipe and some people also add chicken but I like it pretty simple. I made it for a quick dinner this weekend.

One pkg of coleslaw
One package of beef or chicken ramen noodles (broke into pieces and the dry mix)
Half of package of slivered almonds
Chopped scallions (optional)
Salt & pepper to taste
3 Tablespoons of EVOO
1/2 cup of rice vinegar

Toss everything together and voila!

Places to Look Forward To...

- Franklin Park, the new 2000 sq feet bar and beer garden in Prospect Heights is set to open today. Started by the owner of Southpaw, the space will have feature almost 1200 square feet of outdoor space and stay open until 2am. I know where I will be his summer. (Brownstoner)

- Vongerichten Veteran sous chef Tyler Kord will open a new restaurant in Fort Greene at 7 Greene Ave that he describes to Grub Street as "New American, with a little Hungarian, some Korean, and a bit of Wisconsin thrown in.” The principals are in place, including former Perry Street pastry chef Amanda Clark, Weather Up designer Matthew Maddy, and Lil Frankie's GM Matt Suchomski. Nice BK Trifecta. (Grub Street)

- Just as news comes that 360 in Red Hook is officially dunzo, comes news that the famed Chelsea Cheyenne Diner will move to Red Hook. Not so sure that is an even trade but so it goes...

Away in the Woods

I spent the weekend in Woodstock, NY and we cooked a good amount. One night we made steaks with a pepper rub and a peppercorn sauce. We broiled the steak which cooked it super fast and it turned out great. The stovetop was acting a bit funky so broiling was the method of the weekend. We made a great salad as well with greens, beets, avocado, tomatoes and goat cheese. The second night we broiled some salmon fillets with lemon, butter and dill. We still had some leftover salad from the previous night so we accompanied that with the salmon as well as some roasted carrots. Both nights everything tasted so fresh and delicious. On Sunday, we made a big (although less interesting) meal of scrambled eggs, chicken/apple sausage, bacon and toast.

New Spot in Red Hook- Annabelle's

Annabelle’s Chef Neil Ganic (La Bouillabaisse, Petite Crevette) took over the former Lillie’s space to open this Red Hook bar named for his daughter. An interior restoration of the waterside spot uncovered original tiling and a 30-foot mahogany bar. Six beers are on tap (including the requisite Sixpoint selections, brewed nearby), and cocktails include the Big Apple manhattan—Maker’s Mark with Berentzen (German apple schnapps). True to Ganic’s kitchen background, the full menu transcends typical pub grub. Expect mini po’ boys, ratatouille gratinĂ©e and freshly shucked oysters. A back garden, featuring a blue-crab steamer and enough room for 50 landlubbers, is in the works. 44 Beard St at Dwight St, Red Hook, Brooklyn (Time Out)

Key Lime Pie and Tilapia

I decided to try the Bittman recipe I posted about earlier in the week. It turned out great. I used tilapia instead of monkfish (much more economical). In the future, I think I would use about half the olive oil recommended but the flavors were great and it was very easy. I also decided to try making a key lime pie (Martha Stewart) which again, was super easy and everyone who tried it seemed to be a fan.

Key Lime Pie- Ingredients

Makes 1 pie.

  • 1 1/2 cups graham-cracker crumbs (I used a pre made crust in the essence of time)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 5 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 can (14 ounces) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed key-lime juice (I used half fresh, half pre squeezed)
  • 1 tablespoon grated key-lime zest, plus more for garnish
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream, chilled
Directions
  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Combine graham-cracker crumbs, butter, and 3 tablespoons sugar in a medium bowl; mix well. Press into a 9-inch pie plate, and bake until lightly browned, about 12 minutes. Remove from oven, and transfer to a wire rack until completely cooled.
  2. Lower oven to 325 degrees. In a medium bowl, gently whisk together condensed milk, egg yolks, key-lime juice, and zest. Pour into the prepared, cooled crust.
  3. Return pie to oven, and bake until the center is set but still quivers when the pan is nudged, 15 to 17 minutes. Let cool completely on a wire rack.
  4. Shortly before serving, combine cream and remaining 2 tablespoons sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Whisk on medium speed until soft peaks form, 2 to 3 minutes. Spoon over cooled pie; garnish with zest. Serve immediately.

Urban Winery in Red Hook

Not only is Red Hook getting an Ikea but Dr Vino is reporting that it will get a urban winery soon too. Abe Schoener will open the winery in a building on Beard Street sometime late in the summer 2008. Schoener’s partner will be his Brooklyn-based distributor for the NYC area, Mark Snyder of Angel’s Share. The Red Hook winery will make exclusively wines from New York State grapes, purchased from vineyards up the Hudson River Valley and from Long Island. Even though the space will be dramatic, with 60 foot ceilings behind door 15 the huge complex on Beard and Van Brunt, it is not yet determined whether it will be open for visitors.

Some Hova with your Calzone...

I can't help but laugh... From Eater: "CARROLL GARDENS—Where do Beyonce and Jay-Z go when they want a romantic night out? Why, Lucali of course: "So it was hardly surprising, last week, when a Presidential-calibre motorcade pulled up out front. BeyoncĂ© Knowles and Jay-Z emerged, and were quickly ushered to a table near the chef. Their bodyguard, a man roughly the size of the three-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar Maybach sedan idling at the curb, settled into a chair on the sidewalk...Four civilians enduring a long wait on the bench out front...Iacono left his station and came over to the foursome’s table to apologize for the hubbub. 'They didn’t even tell me they were coming!' he said. 'Usually they tell me first.'" [New Yorker]"

Mule

Brownstoner is reporting that the owners of the bar, Cherry Tree on 4th Ave (great backyard!) have bought up their next door neighbor, Mule (why did this place close??? Such a great refuge on 4th Avenue). They are planning to focus on late night hours first, offering beer and coffee and expand from there. I spent lots of time at Mule last summer and am sad to here it closed, apparently it has been empty for the last couple months before the Cherry Tree owners got involved.

Sahadi's

I think most of us who live in the neighborhood have been to Sahadi's. It's one of the staples on Atlantic Ave and despite the chaos that it is on the weekends, its one of the best places to shop. The NY Times has a first person account on the life of Charlie Sahadi.

Brooklyn Flea

Myself along with many, many others hit the Fort Greene Flea on Sunday. It was a super chilly day but that didn't stop the crowds. I was running late to meet some friends so I didn't really pick anything up and instead did a quick sweep of the place. I can't wait to go back and spend some more time there in warmer clothing. There looked to be some great things and food I definitely wanted to try (although the lines were super long). There are a ton of images up at Flickr already. We hit LouLous's afterwards which was dealing with an influx of post flea market shoppers but we were seated not too long after putting our names in. I have been there twice before and always enjoy the food (I got the french burrito which was delicious). I also hit Robin Des Bois this weekend and as always had a tasty meal there.

JakeWalk Trip

So I know I am late to the party on this one but I finally made it over to JakeWalk. I think I had too high expectations for it. The wine list is extensive and good as is the cheese list but I was lukewarm on the fondue we ended up ordering. For $14 I thought we would get a decent heap of bread, meat and fruit, instead we got about eight tiny pieces of pieces of ripped bread, five dried apricots and to be fair, a sizable pile of chopped salami. I got a nice glass of red wine though and my friend enjoyed her prosecco. For two drinks and some fondue it cost us about $30 plus tip, a bit too costly for the general product and service in my opinion but I would give it another shot for a drink (plus I like the wallpaper!)
